Understanding Androgenetic Alopecia
Androgenetic alopecia, better known as male or female pattern baldness, refers to genetic hair loss. Both men and women regularly experience the symptoms of androgenetic alopecia at various times in life, although men are more susceptible to complete baldness than women.
The science of hair loss is a complicated field with many unresolved questions. According to modern studies regarding androgenetic alopecia, hair loss is a result of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) interfering with the natural growth cycle of hair follicles.
Both men and women begin producing more DHT as they age, causing a hair thinning effect that gradually spreads throughout the scalp. Hair grows in a four-stage process that consists of growth, regression, rest and shedding. Each step of the hair growth process can last for a varying length of time, leading to the average hair follicle producing hair in two- to seven-year cycles.
When DHT interferes with the natural growth process, affected follicles can be induced into a prolonged period of rest that gradually progresses until hair no longer grows at all.
Androgenetic alopecia is a condition that has no true cure, but modern medicine allows hair loss experts to develop hair restoration treatment plans that both regulate the rate of hair loss using hair restoration medication and also restore lost hair via hair restoration surgery.

Hair Loss Solutions
Currently, two main hair restoration medications exist for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: minoxidil and finasteride. Minoxidil, most commonly prescribed in the form of Rogaine, can slow down and minimize future hair loss when used regularly.
Studies have shown that patients who use Rogaine foam or liquid once or twice daily can expect to see a noticeable decrease in the progression of their hair loss.
Originally intended for use in treating enlarged prostates, finasteride is now commonly prescribed to combat the effects of DHT in the form of the medication Propecia.
By slowing the conversion of testosterone to DHT, Propecia can mitigate further hair loss and even revive miniaturized follicles whose growth cycles have begun to decrease production.
For patients interested in cutting-edge haor follicle restoration treatments, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy offers a new and promising hair restoration treatment option that utilizes the patient’s own blood.
During PRP therapy, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient and centrifuged to separate the nutrient-rich plasma from the blood cells.
After being mixed with a proprietary mix of various ingredients including ACell, the PRP is then injected into thinning areas of the scalp to provide a fresh and direct source of nutrients straight to the aging follicles.
By far the most effective and transformative hair loss restoration option is hair transplantation surgery. While medicated products and treatments can manage and slow down ongoing hair loss, they are unable to regrow hair.
With hair transplants, patients can fill in bald spots and completely rebuild their thinning hairlines. During surgery, follicular units are harvested from healthy sections of the scalp and then implanted in the targeted areas. Unlike older procedures, modern hair transplants provide results that are completely natural and effective.
